I first came across the Raw food diet for dogs. I had a German Shepard that was allergic to everything in commercial dog foods and after much research I was convinced that a diet mimicking what the animals had been eating for most of their time on earth, the food they evolved to eat, was the way to go. Remember, kibble has only been around since around the 1930’s. Since feeding Monkey Pants raw food, she has becoming livelier, more talkative (!) and her coat has visibly improved. While canned cat food is much better than dry food because of its higher water percentage, a high portion of it is still largely made up of various carbohydrates such as wheat and corn - these have been shown to be difficult to digest by cats. I believe that food is medicine. What we consume affects our health and that applies to any other creature. If we consume foods that are poor in quality, over-processed (meaning many vitamins and nutrients are destroyed) and unbalanced, our health will suffer. Our pets can’t choose their diet. They can only eat what we put in front of them. I also believe in responsibility and having a pet means that I will strive to provide a diet for it that will meet all of its dietary needs to allow it to thrive. Put it another way, would you feed your child a diet of fast-food alone? |
